Just Nips Certified Breast Self-Exam Instructions:

Start by looking at your breasts in the mirror. Keep your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Look for breasts that are their usual shape, size and color. Look for breasts that are evenly shaped without any visible swelling or distortion. If you see any of the following changes, please bring them to your doctor’s attention immediately. Changes include: dimpling, puckering or bulging of the skin, a nipple with a changed position or a newly inverted nipple, redness, soreness, any rash or swelling. 

Raise your arms and look for the same changes. Changes include: dimpling, puckering or bulging of the skin, a nipple with a changed position or a newly inverted nipple, redness, soreness, any rash or swelling. 

Look for any sign of fluid coming out of one or both nipples. Take note of any fluid that appears watery, milky, yellow-like or blood. 

Once you have finished these steps, lay down and use your right hand to feel your left breast and use your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm touch with the pads of your fingers. Be sure to keep your fingers flat and together while you use a circular motion to check for any irregularities. Keeping your fingers together while moving in a circular motion and continue to cover the entire breast from top to bottom and side to side. Cover the area from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen. Cover the area in your armpit to your cleavage. Follow a pattern to ensure you cover the entire breast. You may begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the other edge of the breast. You may also move your fingers up and down each breast vertically. Be sure to feel all of the breast tissue from the front to the back of your breasts.

For the skin and tissue just beneath, use light pressure. Use medium pressure for the middle of your breasts and use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. 

Finally, repeat these steps while standing up. Cover the area from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen. Cover the area in your armpit to your cleavage. Follow a pattern to ensure you cover the entire breast. You may begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the other edge of the breast. You may also move your fingers up and down each breast vertically.

Be sure to feel all of the breast tissue from the front to the back of your breasts. If you see any changes or irregularities, please bring them to your doctor’s attention immediately.
